WHAT IF is an installation inspired by the book Atlas of AI, exploring the hidden environmental costs of artificial intelligence (AI) development. As AI technology advances rapidly, the mining industry, which is a key component of the AI sector—particularly the extraction of rare earth elements and the creation of tailing ponds—has caused severe water resource damage, leading to significant environmental problems.
Through interaction with water, viewers can directly observe the toxic substances produced in the water as AI-generated images emerge. I hope people can reflect on the environmental costs behind AI while enjoying its conveniences, and seek a sustainable future. As we benefit from technological advances, can we find a balance that allows AI to develop without relying on the exploitation of natural resources?
